My Hobbies: Spray Painting Things!
This hobby of mine is about adding color to furniture and furnishings - It's not about graffiti or "art."

The Flower Bench
I wanted a bench to hold flowers by the living room window, but finding the right height was a challenge.
I was helping someone move and they asked me to take a table (among other things) to Goodwill...
It was exactly the right height and a nice design, but too wide (and it had that tar/nicotine hue).
Here is the "before" picture (albeit apart in my garage).
And to reduce the table width while keeping the nice design:
Many thanks to Larry H. for help with the carpentry!
And here is the finished project:
Most colors used in this project were Rust-Oleum Gloss Protective Enamels . But the bottom shelf is Krylon Ballet Slipper
which is a nice color.
Coffee Mug Board
Remember the leftover middle piece from the table that became the flower bench?
We had an unfinished end on the kitchen cabinets and not enough room for our souvenir coffee mugs.
Here is the before and after look:
And the finished look:
This Rust-Oleum Textured Finish  adds a nice touch for the grass.
The "water" is a Valspar Brushed Pearl  that matches the wall beside it. The sand is a Valspar Sandstone that matches the rest of the walls in the room.
Patio Tables
I picked up these tables at a mid-week moving sale in the neighborhood - Cheap and specifically for the screen porch.
After 7 years outside in Florida, their finish had gone from white, to wood with just a hint of white. I can't find any clear before pictures, but the one below of shells from Sanibel has a bit of the big table in the upper left, blown up in the picture on the right:
The new cushions inspired the refinish. I also needed a place to put a few shells, so I added the "shelves" under the glass.
Here are the patio tables:
The top of the large table and legs of the side table are Krylon Coral Isle  - a wonderful color that no one carries. Although this particular can came from Big Lots, you would normally have to order it.
The legs of the large table are Krylon Catalina Mist  and the top of the side table is Krylon Blue Ocean Breeze
.
The shelves use a Rust-Oleum Textured Finish  for a wet sand look.
Patio Shelves
Let's face it, these desk top shelves were junk from the start and after several years outside in Florida, "EYESORE" is the only description that comes to mind.

But after some cleaning ![]() ![]() and of course painting with: Rust-Oleum America Accents Lagoon  ![]() Krylon Coral Isle  ![]() ![]() (I'm not sure why there are no color names on the Valpsar spray cans) |
It's at least much less of an eyesore (at least the shelves themselves ;o)

These are cheap pine shelves that were stained walnut, which is too dark for just about anything. As you can see by the tape, I just barely remembered to get a "before" shot (below). ![]() |

Most of the shelves were Rust-Oleum Gloss Protective Enamels , but I ran out of orange and grabbed one at Ace to finish up
.
The second shelf down is the Valspar teal color  and the third shelf down is Krylon Citrus Green
.
The outside verticle is Krylon Purple  and the inside as well as the facing at the bottom is Krylon Gum Drop
.
Here is the finished project in use:
Bird Bath
I received this beautiful bird bath from my office Secret Santa (Gail). A nice haul for the office party! (and a cute back story that I was in the store when she bought it and actually saw her a gave her a coupon, but never saw the bird bath) |

I had this pedestal - left behind by the former owner - and it needed some work to sit under that bath. It's metal, so there was corrosion clean up, and as you can see, it was brown, so paint was essential. |

After several rounds of tape, spray, dry, repeat…here's how it looks:

And with the bird bath:
For the colors I should just refer you to the color "wheel" at the top of this page.
The top is Krylon Coral Isle . Oranges and yellows are Rust-Oleum Gloss Protective Enamels
.
The Blues (Periwinkle  and Peekaboo Blue)
 and Purples (Gum Drop
 and PPurple)
are all Krylon colors.
Planters and spicing up the Deck
Have you seen my deck building animations?
They end with cutting off the overhang, which resulted in me pack-ratting a lot of short raw materials:
So here is the first planter that I made, the colors inspired by the intended occupant:
Since these are not 90 degree angles, the challenge is cutting everything so it lines up and drilling/driving the screws without moving the alignment.
The point is, I was glad for Jack's help making some more, as well as the idea of double hanging, like this pair:

Did you notice that the clay pots are also painted in that last one? There are more planters and pretty pots in the works:
I also added some color to plant stands that were otherwise looking pretty sad, as the before picture shows (also shows the before deck, ugh):

While most of these planter colors (above) have already been "promoted" previously on this page, the one second from the right is Krylon Watermelon .

Full disclosure: I did not make or paint these planters. They were gifts from my parents, from: Jimmy's Woodcrafts ![]() |

And disclosure complete, here's a wider view:
Frames
Julee gave me this print for Christmas. It's from a local artist that we saw at an art show and I clearly liked.
Instead of an expensive framing job, well, the animation tells the story:
Have you seen my Family Photos  page?
Most, if not all of these on the left are available there, except the pretty frames. On the right is our shrine to Deborah and Sam:

This remote control caddy started out like this:  but ths Vaspar color
is a much better fit in the "paradise" corner of the room.
